Padmesh Gupta

Biography

The Story of Padmesh Gupta

From a 15-year-old shouldering family responsibility to one of Central India's most respected leaders.

Chapter 1: The Beginning

Padmesh Gupta was born on February 29, 1964 — a rare Leap Day — in Nagpur, Maharashtra. His name, meaning “Lord Vishnu — The Creator,” foreshadowed a life dedicated to building and nurturing.

His grandfather, Late Shri Mahadev Prasadjee Gupta, had founded the Gupta Group in 1940 as a coal trading business. Young Padmesh grew up absorbing the values of hard work, integrity, and community service that defined his grandfather's character.

Educated at St. Francis De Sales School (S.F.S.) Nagpur and later earning his B.Com from G.S. College, Padmesh was shaped by both rigorous academic discipline and the spiritual grounding of his family. His childhood in Nagpur instilled a deep connection to the land and people of Central India.

Chapter 2: Rising to the Challenge

In 1979, tragedy struck when Padmesh's grandfather passed away suddenly. At just 15 years of age, the young man was thrust into the role of family patriarch and business leader. It was a defining moment — the weight of generations of legacy on the shoulders of a teenager.

Rather than buckle under the pressure, Padmesh demonstrated extraordinary resilience and maturity. He took on the mantle with discipline and resolve, learning the intricacies of coal trading, building relationships with customers and suppliers, and earning the trust of everyone around him.

Through the 1980s and 90s, he systematically grew the business, expanding operations and building what would become one of India's most respected names in the energy sector.

Chapter 3: Building an Empire

In 1999, Padmesh formally established Gupta Corporation Limited (GCL) as the independent investment arm of the group. Under his chairmanship, the corporation diversified into a ₹3,000 crore empire spanning coal mining, power generation, infrastructure, and international logistics.

Key achievements include establishing India's first 120 MW power plant running on washery rejects at Usegaon, Maharashtra — a breakthrough in sustainable energy. The group became one of the first Indian companies to acquire an independent coal mine in Indonesia and established global trading operations through Singapore.

Yet for Padmesh, the business was never just about profit. He viewed electrification as a means to “bring light” to rural India, earning the tagline “Lights Up Life” — and employing over 2,000 families across India and abroad.

Chapter 4: Giving Back — The Mission of a Lifetime

From the year 2000 onwards, Padmesh Gupta channelled the group's success into large-scale philanthropy. He founded two charitable trusts — the Seth Mahadeo Prasadji Gupta Charitable Trust (in his grandfather's name) and the P.D. Gupta Foundation Trust — both focused on education, healthcare, environment, and community welfare.

In 1992, he began building Gau-Vignyan Anusandhan Kendra at Deolapar — bringing to life the vision of the late Moropant Pingle of RSS. This cow science research centre has since secured 5 international patents, studied over 100 indigenous cow breeds, and is now set to become India's first Cow Sciences University under a Maharashtra Government bill.

Saints have conferred upon him the title “Govatsa” — the highest honour in Gau-Seva. Today, he dedicates his entire energy and time to cow science, cow economics, and cow culture — a true transformation from industrialist to visionary social reformer.
